SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and operator maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students as necessary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Must have no convictions of a felony or past criminal history, be in good health as evidenced by completion of a physical examination as prescribed by the Board.  Must be of good character and moral behavior. Must possess a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Must be in possession of a valid Kentucky driver’s license with a good driving record; must be able to obtain a Commercial driver’s license and pass state skill and written tests.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

A driver of a special needs bus vehicle shall meet the same qualifications and licensing requirements as a regular driver.

Must have at least (2) years driving experience.

Special needs drivers shall be required to attend other special training programs as designated by the local district.

 

CRITICAL SKILL/EXPERTISE REQUIRED:

Knowledge of:

Safe driving practices.

Provisions of the State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students.

First aid practices.

Interpersonal skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting;keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Ability to:

Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.

Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus.

Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.

Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.

Learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards.

Maintain routine records.

Maintain and keep current transportation confidential emergency cards and other required reports. This information is to be maintained in accordance with the Family Education and Privacy Act., and state and local special needs regulations.

Establish and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with others.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Meet schedules and timelines.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.

Utilize and safely operate the special equipment needed for each student.

Arrange the seating of students, where possible, to prevent emotional or physical disturbance (but allow “normal” interaction between students). The special needs teacher for these students may be of great assistance in these situations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Observe applicable local, state and federal policies, procedures and guidelines.

Pick up and discharge students, under varying weather conditions, at established bus stops; report incidents to appropriate administrator(s) which affect the safety of students.

Maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and driver maintenance.

Fuel and clean exterior of bus paying particular attention to rear windows and bulbs; clean interior of bus including sweeping and mopping floor and cleaning upholstery.

Maintains discipline when students are on the bus and reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.

Performs emergency bus evacuation drills as prescribed by Kentucky Administration Regulations.

Maintain all written records designated by the Director of Transportation, Principal and/or Superintendent.

Prepare Medicaid reimbursement forms of students transported for the Director of Special Needs Education.

Utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.

Maintain CPR and first aid certification and perform according to established guidelines and procedures.

Transport only those persons designated by the Superintendent and/or board.

Allows only authorized and qualified persons to drive the bus.

Buses will be used only for purposes authorized by the Superintendent and/or board.

Attends all mandated in-service.

Be willing to learn how to care for each student under any circumstances that might occur while the students are on the bus.

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Will be required to complete all required training  and attend in-service sessions.

Performs assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Consistently displays self-control with parents, students and school personnel.

Maintains a clean work station (bus, desk, office, etc.)and does maintenance as needed.

Be clean, neat and appropriately dressed.

Be consistently responsible and display an attitude of honesty and credibility.

Show enthusiasm, interest and concern for the total program and its efficient operation.

Maintains student control.

Operate equipment in a safe manner at all times.

Demonstrate positive behavior toward the purposes and goals of the Barren County Public Schools.

Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Displays flexibility and willingness to adjust to route changes as they are deemed necessary by the local district.

Make sure that a student is not left unattended on the bus or at the drop off point. The driver will follow district policy for handling this situation.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demand described here are representative of those that must be met by and employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Specifically must have the ability to:

 

Open and close manually operated bus entrance door control with a force of at least 30 pounds.

Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17.5 inches.

Operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly.

Carry or drag a 125- pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less.

Exit from an emergency door opening of 24 x 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in ten seconds or less.

No mental, nervous, organic or functional disease or disability likely to interfere with safe driving or other responsibilities of a special needs school bus driver.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Work year is comprised of the number of days as designated by the current school calendar and board policy with 4 paid holidays.

Salary commensurate with adopted classified personnel salary schedule.

Sick leave and personal leave provided as stated in board policy.

The employee is an “at will” employee and the superintendent may terminate this employment at any time.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
